I took the stand outside tonight to paint it black. Once this coat is dry I will add another.
Then im setting up the 20 gallon long to put shrimp and maybe some Blue Rams in.
I have some questions?
What kind of substrate would be best? Im thinking about getting some crushed coral because I think it looks really good but I dont know if thats best for the shrimp.
Also I know that I need some plant life. I dont want to get crazy with a co2 set up so what kind of plants do you recommend? Where can I get them?
The plan is to just set up something that looks nice. Im pretty sure this one is going in the living room. I want to be able to let the rams and shrimp breed. Should I have a problem with them co existing? I think the Rams are pretty docile.
Also this tank might house some ghost shrimp occasionally that I will use as feeders.
Your thoughts and ideas would be appreciated!

I'll bring down some low light plants. I know nothing about rams but fish love to eat shrimp. Diy c02 is pretty simple really.

Depends on what type of shrimp, any of the larger species (bamboo, ammano) should be OK. Cardinia would not be OK with Rams IMO.

What about the cherry reds? Would they be ok?

You could try, but I personally would not do it. Rams are pretty aggresive when it cones to finding food sources.

So what kind of filter would be best for this tank? I read one article on line that a guy uses those cheap sponge filters from ebay that are run by an air pump?

HOB rated for 30 to 55 gal with a modified strainer so as not to suck up the fry.

A sponge filter should work fine. I just order two a week ago for a breeding project a lady was working on.

I would use a sponge filter also for the shrimp - that's what I have in mine and it is working fine. I would use pool filter sand as substrate - it's cheap and looks great. It is inert and won't change your water chemistry. I have a few GBR pairs left if you still want some (1 or 2).

There is a reason I don't use sponge filters on my shrimp tanks. Can anyone guess why it can be a bad idea?

There is a reason I don't use sponge filters on my shrimp tanks. Can anyone guess why it can be a bad idea? Is it because they will pick at the sponge? You have me stumped and curious now. Please do tell!

There is a place near me that has it. 50 pounds for a little less than $9 I think. Holiday pools in Westmoreland area near west Huntington. I could pick up some on my way home from work one evening and meet you somewhere with it.

Hey Josh,
Any pool or spa store should have it. I have not found it at Home Depot, Lowes or Wal-Mart. I got 50 lbs for 8.50 - so any thing around 9 would be OK. I love the stuff - I have it in all my tanks.

I set the tank up last night. Put that sand Tom picked up for me in the bottom and filled the tank up. Gotta clean some filters today and let the cycle begin. Also did the same with my 10 gallon tank. It is sitting below the 20 on the same stand.
