I have talked to Barry about this. I asked him what I could breed and sell to him so that he could get them locallly. He said that any kind of african cichlid would work. Preferably something like blue johanni.
I really want to get some electric blue jack dempseys. They are selling online for like $10-15 a pop as juvie fry.
What would you think could be profitable? I know im not going to make a killing would just like to make enough to pay for me fish food and maybe to buy some equipment with.

I think the most rewarding would be dovii. You will need a nice sized tank but I have never seen any of them for sale in this area.

Dovis are rare in the area, but not a best seller. Any of the so called peacock cichlids are a good candidate.

I actually like the looks of a dovii but my boys that Bruce gave me will be king of the 180 soon and I dont have another tank big enough for all of them to get along.

One of the other things that Barry told me would do good would be some Blue and Red Rams. Ken from the Fish Farm in Georgia has several breeding pairs he will get rid of. I think Im going to have my wife get me those for my birthday.

Rams are great, i never had any luck with spawning them but I never seriously tried. We got in some long fin gold rams this week and they were tempting but I didn't get any.

I had a couple I bought from Jo Marrs but they died on me. Not what happened. They were doing great for a couple week and then i found them stuck to the tube for the filter.

Yep rams are tricky especially the golds for some reason, but once the settle in they tend to do well. I always loose some when I bring them home.

Mine were good and healthy for several weeks. Then I came home and they were dead stuck against the filter.

I think they are quite sensitive to pH.

As Many know, breeding just helps cut the costs of fishkeeping. I do have EB Alhi's I can't get rid of, and Escondido Carpinte. Plus the guppies, angels, oscar eggs.....etc. I am to far from anyone. The closet LFS's are elkins and clarksburg. Bummer.

if you can get down to the swap bring some of that stuff with you. I would take some of those EB Alhi's. And I never thought about it but every LFS sells Oscars. I could breed them so they could buy local. hmmm.....

If you decide to breed O's order about five wilds from Jeff Rapps. Then wait until you get a pair then you will have some top notch O's to distribute.

Sounds like a plan. Need to wait for another big tank though. Once I move my office into what is now our bedroom then I would really consider this.

If I come I'll bring a Ahli or two. Also a "escondido" Carpinte or two. I just hope someone would want them. It'd be a long journy back. Another 2 hrs or so. I also have a 6" pirahna I'd like to get rid of. (rescue fish)

Bring the fish. The piranha I would take to the shop and let them rehome him. I took mine there when he got too big for me.
I know what the ahli are but what are the escondido?

if anyone wants a breeding pair of texas cichlids, i have two pair of them, might hard to get them out of the tank as a pair without loosing track of which is which, but in the right conditions, they breed once a month and produce 75-200 fry.
ive had them for about 18 months now.
non-breeding ive got two salvani's two jack dempseys, and a couple others.

FYI!!! Gold Rams do a lot better in a softwater planted tank.. I had trouble with all the rams until I got into keeping apisto's and the guy I got them from said to put the rams in the same water/conditions as my apisto pairs and so I did and boom I had babies from every pair I had.... My secret was a canister filter with nothing but peat and floss on my top up tubs....
Michael Drake
P.s. Rams like apistogramma will herium breed (1 male & 2+ females). In a bigger tank like a 20L I housed 6 femaled and 2 males... Had great success with em.....
