Keep seeing a breakout of aiptasia. I guess a two part question. What's causing it? and How do I get rid of it? I bought some aiptasia remover at the LFS and put it in a hyperdermic needle. It sucks in so fast that I'm not sure if I'm getting it or not. I noticed that it keeps comming back.

Don't waste your money, that stuff just makes them spread, anything you inject them with will cause an plague in time. The only way to get rid of them is to find something that eats them or by putting kalk paste directly on top of them, you need to repeat this several times.

Thanks. Think I'm gonna go with the kaulk paste. I'd found a racoon butterfly that eats them but he also liked to nip too much on coral, had to rtemove him into another tank.

copper banded butterflies eat them as well

copper banded butterflies eat them as well I would stay away from most butterfly fish in a reef aquarium. Copper banded are probably the safest but do not fair well in most aquariums. I would use peppermint shrimp instead, they are fairly hearty after acclimation and seem to do very little damage to other coral, etc in the tank.

No they will eat them if they are healthy enough, th eproblem comes from keeping them alive after they eat all the anemone as they do not do well on regular fish foods.

Luckily I realized it before I put them in the tank so they did not get to eat anything but it was still a waste of money.

mine hid to but he ate the aptasia. they are a more noctornal creature and kinda territoril. You cant expect one to clean out a big tank by himself

I guess I can't say it doesn't eat it, it may just be keeping up. I have a few that have disappeared and some new ones. so maybe he is eating it just one so maybe I have the right balance. The apitasia is growing at the same rate that he eats it. I can live with that, keep the big fellow alive and my apitasia at a min.

i recently read that u could take a syringe and needle and inject the aiptasia with 0.5ml of lemon juice. i had one really big anemone so i tried it and it worked great!!! the anemone was gone in about 30secs. now its no where to be seen. i have several smaller ones but a needle wont go in them. ive found some stuff called aiptasia-x that supposedly works so i just ordered it today so i guess well see if it works

Ok I'll say it one more time.
All of the consumer level "cures" are remedies at best. All I have seen and used so far are short term fixes and are not long term solutions for the problem. I mean really think about that, what company in there right mind would release something that would completely kill off the demand for their product? They would be out of a job pretty soon if they were making it strong enough to actually kill off invasive anemones, pests etc. This is also a good example of why we don't have a bottle "Red-Bug -X" Because it is not profitable to re-package, and re-distribute etc an actual "cure" for a problem, when one already exists.
Unless you kill all of them and I mean every single one they will return, and injecting them will cause them to spread. In almost 90% of the cases I have seen and tests I have conducted they retreat for a few months then come back with a vengeance. I believe that what is happening is an advanced predatory survival technique that they have evolved. When the anemone is attacked by other predators (you in this case) they insure survivability by expelling genetic material (eventual clones of themselves) which settle through out the entire tank. This might also explain why the anemones in these plague type events seem about the same age (size). Keep an eye open you will see far more than you originally attacked. My advice is either the Kalk paste or a true peppermint shrimp, these are the only long term solutions I have yet to find.
Good luck though, everyone finds there own way to deal with pests in there systems, and these are some of the mildest you will come up against IMO.

He could have eaten him, but I have seen peppermints go into hiding for months especially if they are small ones. I would say he is gone one way or the other though or you would not be seeing any remaining. In fact I can always tell when my Peps die, because the friggin aiptasia always repopulate

I got a few peps at Jomars a couple months ago. The only time I see them is at night with a flashlight. They hide all day. They took care of my aiptasia though!

I liked my Pep shrimp. He did a great job with Aptaisa control among other things. He did eat mysis and pellet foods as well. But just a little note, if you have a diamond spot goby that has a big mouth, he is going to eat better than you and may make lunch of your shrimp. I can tell you, I have never gotten to eat a single shrimp that cost that much. He swallowed mine in one bite.
