Is it common for clowns to be mean? I did alot of reaseach online and thought I would be okay adding a fake percula to my 30 gallon tank that had small yellow damsel and a small high fin cardinal. They were fine for about three weeks. After that the clown started fighting with the cardinal really bad, to the point that I had to give him to a friend, she has him in a tank by himself and he is doing great. Is this common for this fish? I would like to have one of these in the tank, but I don't want to put one in there if I will have the same problem again. Just wondering if maybe I got a mean one? I feel 100% sure if I would have left them together the clown (now known as "Pennywise") would have killed my cardinal. Thanks for any advise!

yes the are aggressive. You probably had a more then normal one, they tend to be better in twos.

Clowns are territorial. They are part of the damsel family of fish. Occelaris are usualy the most nonaggressive of the bunch though.

My two only go after new additions for a couple of days then they start hanging around each other again.

I tried to wait it out, but it kept getting worse and the clown was the new addition. I bought more rock and made lots of caves and places to hide so each fish could have their own part of the tank. It got to where Moritati was only hiding and his fins were badly nipped! As soon as we took the clown out the cardinal is back out in the open and happy. I don't want to stress him as he is my favorite of the tank (I know I shouldnt have a favorite, but I do!!)

All you can do is try a couple that are in a tank with others, you may have to take them back but once they are established and happy then evrything should be good.

Well, I'm the one with Pennywise now and since he has no one to pick on he is doing great! Thanks susanmc! You know I started this whole hobby years ago just to have a clownfish! Now I have Pennywise in his own tank and Petunia in hers (Gold Band Maroon). I'm happy!
