Harlequin shrimp are tied with a Peacock Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus) The harlequin requires a constant supply of stars to live as they dont eat anything else. So it can be difficult to keep. Theres 2 in the display tank at Jo-Mars that do well. The mantis needs a species tank as they will demolish jut about anything (snails, hermits, fish, your finger lol) But man they are beautiful. I dont own either so I dont have pics but heres pics on wiki. You need to copy the url and paste to get it to work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Odontodactylus_scyllarus1.jpg - mantis en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hymenocera_picta.jpg - harlequin

Those harlequin shrimp are neat... I have a decent stock of asterina stars. I would be afraid I would starve one though.

they can demolisha population of asterinas if the tank is not big enough and they are established enough. Once they are gone you are looking at chocolate chips and linkias (thats some expensive food if you ask me)
They are like mandarins. They can destroy the population of their food in a heartbeat if they do not have a steadily breeding establishment in the tank (and big enough to give enough hiding spots)
It sucks all the most beautiful critters can be so hard to keep lol.

Thats rough.. the harlequins are beautiful.
Off topic:
Agreed... I am quite sure I am going to tempt a mandarin in the 125. Going to seed the tank with pods while I have little to no fish in it... and fill my new built fuge with pods as well

Good luck with the mandarin they are beautiful, When you add the pods (dont use tigger pods they will die in our warm waters, they make great food but wont live) make sure you add them in intervals, dont add them all at once, add some and wait a couple days and add more, after doing that a few times then wait a couple weeks and add more.
That will make sure at least some get established and not eaten, its the best method I have heard for getting them to truley set in the tank.

Not quite only the large mantis will be a serious problem the smaller species I have kept with both fish, crabs, snails. Granted I fed him a lot of krill and he took it from my hand but if you don't feed one it will eat anything. I don't reccomend harlequins unless you have a massive self replicating population of stars.

I have been contemplating getting a mandrin also. I really like them and I have pods running all over the place at night.
I like the harlequin shrimps too. Phil has one and always seems to come out and say hi when I go over.

I heard that as well but i think it was under circumstances they didnt mention. Bad tank or something. To many people are keeping them without problems for it to be solid evidence.

Actually it's more likely from the early days of reef keeping, back then I believe thinner glass was used in 10 gallons but Im not 100% sure on that. I do know that there strike has been clocked at speeds close to a 22 cal. so a big one (1 foot or so) would likely have no problem shattering most glass. They like to take there aggression out on crabs and snails usually though. As aside note not all mantis shrimp are clubers, they also can have spears and these make no noise at all in the tank.

This is by far my favorite shrimp, it is a FW one but all the same it is an amazing shrimp. It is a crystal red shrimp and after about 2 years of searching we finally found some! Now if i can just get them to breed it will be a good day.
