I hope this fits under this topic. My dream tank set up, as it stands right now, would be two 47 gallon column tanks on either side of a 75 gallon tank. I would want the stand to probably be about three inches taller on either side for the column tanks to show off their height better. So my question would be... Would this stand set up be possible by mixing store bought stands or would it have to be custom made? Three pieces would probably work best, but I would want it to look like it was one piece. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I would definitely do a DIY job on the stands. Otherwise it will look like you just threw three tanks and stands beside each other. I would skin the three stands and make it look like it is all one stand.

For another DIY project I have been thinking about is building my own stone pile decoration and was wondering where a good source to get volcano rocks is around here (my brain died on what they are called), that is also safe to use in an aquarium. Not sure exactly how much would be required, but I want it to be pyramidal in shape with caves inside for fish to use like dwarf cichlids or others that enjoy hiding places... any thoughts

Everything I have read elsewhere has said that lava rock, especially the ones you can get for landscaping, mostly just clouds up the water really bad. So it probably won't work. I'll just have to remember my tanks next time I go out to Colorado or Arizona and hit up the rock shops there that are common. mmm... Tucson gem and minral show.... sorry rock hound moment...

dainramis: I REALLY like the idea of the two columns beside the 75...... one question though.... are the 47 columns the standard all-glass hexagon shape??? If so this stand would be an awesome DIY build!!!!! I imediately had an idea as soon as I read it.....

Could'nt you take a waterhose to them, or soak them?

The column tanks i am looking at are standard square shape, I didn't know that they made a hex tank in roughly that same size.... interesting... unfortunatly I am no woodworker so I don't think that I could tackle a hex stand but who knows. Thanks for the support.
As for the rock some of the places I read said that you could do that but they still tend to cloud up water whenever they are moved. Several people suggested a powerwasher to clean them. I'll take a look at a landscaping place and see if it is cheap enough to give it a shot.

There have been people use them for filter media. I guess they clog quicker than it was worth to pressure wash them.
