I was taking a look at tanks a while ago and really liked the idea of putting together an angel tank in a 47 gallon column aquarium, or if very ambitious, a pair of 47's on either side of a large long tank... One can dream, and my grand idea there is an entirely different beast. Back to the topic at hand:
How many pairs of angels do you suggest in the tank and how would I get down to a paired pair? (hope that makes sense)
What other tankmates do you suggest to complete the tank but still keep focus on the angels standing out?

From everything I have read the best way to get a pair is to buy several at about nickel size and grow them out and let them pair up on their own then thin them out if you wish.
I would think you could keep quite a few in a 47 gallon.

Ok so here is what I am thinking will look good in the 47 gallon column (dimensions:20 3/16" L X 18 3/16" W X 63 5/16" H) let me know what issues could come up.
4 angel fish (2 pairs possibly) 6 diamond tetra 6 rummy nose 4 hatchet fish 2 gourami (pair not sure what type) 6 corys 4 otocinclus cats
Any thoughts or is it a thumbs up?

You may run into some problems with overcrowding as the water column is verticle rather than horizontal but other than the angels I see no real problems. I will suggest you go with dwarf gouramis though in either case.

thanks that was what i was wondering. Just a single pair sounds like a plan, hopefully when I get to making this a nice pair will come out of my grouping. What is a good number of angels to start with, then weed out if needed? Or should I just choose two i like and see what happens?

4 would be good no more than 6 smaller ones and weed out to just the two.

Cool so with the information I have gathered here and my own looking/experience, it looks like for the column tank I dream about:
Hood: hood that comes with tank Light: light that comes with hood (upgraded when I find out what is needed if needed) Filter: Marinland Emperor 280 (for up to 50 gallons) Heater: not sure what brand but 55 Watt Substrate: dark gravel (any idea where to get naturally black gravel?) Decoration: fake root system
Plants: Pretty dense and what has grown well in my 29 Ancharis in back wysteria in middle java fern in front
Fish: 6 angels (some combination of wild type, gold pearlscale, black, possibly koi or blue if I can find any) and just keep an eye on them if anything needs to be done about thinning 6 diamond tetras 6 lemon or rummy nose tetras (forgot about the lemons) 4 hatchet fish (marbled?) 6 corys 4 otocinclus Random ghost shrip whenever I stop seeing them
Stand: simple stand that comes with tank/stand combo I am looking at (I'll build the beast when I can afford all 3 tanks)
any thoughts about the over all build/ setup? It seemed to get less and less set as I started writing it all down. oh well

On the stocking question - the general rule of thumb is 1 adult angel per 10 gallons (same for Discus). I have many more than that in my tanks but I do regular maintenance and water changes. If you do stock it heavy - you will need to commit to doing weekly (at least) water changes and keeping the gravel clean. I wouldn't want more than 4 or 5 adults in that tank w/all the other inhabitants - also realize that when they mature the aggression factor may go out of the roof. I had 10 adults in a 95 and had to remove a koi male that was totally terrorizing the entire tank to keep everyone away from his chosen mate. Angels can be aggressive, especially when breeding comes into play. With a column shaped tank there will be less room for the others to run away so there may be constant fighting.
HTH,

Yes, Angels do get mean. As soon as they pair up take out the rest.

oh thanks for finding those tanks and they are close to what I am looking for but right now I don't have any room/ floor support for what i am looking for. I mis read the posts earlier and thought you two were just chatting about similiar tanks, sorry if I ignored you guys... Everything in this thread, so far is all theoretical I live in a crap house with no room for anything other than my imagination. Just trying to get as many kinks out before I purchase anything real

Alright looks like I got 2/3+ thinking or hammered out. Now to move onto the middle part of the set up... the 75 gallon center tank
Right now a community tank with lots of schooling fish sounds nice. I am not a fan of giant oscars and whatnot but I do like my large schools and their visual appeal. What are some thoughts on rainbowfish as th main focus fish? (possibly 6 boesemani and/or 6 banded rainbow fish or others) What are some ideas for tankmates also? Should I go more semi-aggressive (barbish), or community oriented (tetra style)? I have never had a tank anywhere near that size that I was in controll of or knew what I was doing with, so any input would be great! thanks

As long as you keep the comm style fish in groups of 5-6 they Might be all right with the semi ags. Remember, all fish have unique personalities. I have a 3" Yellow lab that kills anything (within it's size) that is'nt yellow.
