1.025 is best imo. 1.026 is fine I would not go above 1.026 or lower than 1.024. If your keeping a fish only tank you can go as low as 1.017.

I have always kept my tanks at 35ppt which is 1.0264, if I remember correctly, using a refractometer. But when I first started reefkeeping I didnt have a refractometer and I just used one of the plastic hydrometer. The hydromoters are notorious for being off. So I am sure I wasnt at 35ppt but I kept softies and sps fine. And when I first started I didnt have a ATO system either. But I always tried to keep it consistant at the level the hydrometer was reading. Which could have really been anywhere.
Phil is right with the acceptable range but it is not where in that range you keep it that is important IMO, it is the consistency at what ever level you choose that is most important.
With that said though most salt mixes are designed to have a specific amount of calcium, mag, alk and such at full strength seawater, which is 35ppt. So if you are mixing to levels lower than this you probably will have to buffer some of these up to get to the proper levels. But then again I have not used a salt mix that was perfect in regards to all levels anyways. Most are either high in some and low in others. So you must chose the lesser of 2 evils so to speak.
Hope this helps
