One of the biggest beginner questions is what do I do when my KSB starts to shed? KSB after all prefer a drier environment right? SO how do we make sure we provide enough moisture for them to shed properly? We use shed boxes, in our own case we use a plastic tub filled with moss that we moisten daily. The key is to make sure the moss is damp but not so damp that it could cause mold to grow. Tricky isn't it? But when done properly the results are perfect every time.
As soon as we notice our snake about to shed we prepare the shed box and keep it moist. As you can see here they also will tend to hide under the box at times. Note the coloration of the snake here, she is really about ready to go. It is at this stage that attention must be paid to insure a clean shed. Make sure the moss is damp at all times.
You can place your snake in the box but you really don't have to , they are very smart and can seek out humid areas, she knows what to do just keep the moss damp. Note the coloration of the body here, their is now enough moisture to help begin separation of the old skin and newer skin, shedding will occur shortly after this. It may appear your snake has shed but on closer examination you will note she still has not done so.
There you have it, after a few days you will see a freshly shed snake. We leave the shed box in a few day's for her as she enjoys laying in it for a while after shedding, as long as its in there lightly mist it, you don't have to keep it soaked now just a little damp.
Special thanks to Oreo here for the great demo pics
NOTE: This is not the only method that will work. It is used by many high end breeders and it is simply the method that we choose to employ on our KSB's, use what works best for your snake and your particular situation.
