The basic question here is....what's the differences and advatages of one over the other??? The way I see it is they are both the same type of lighting however with the SE you don't have to have the glass diffuser like on the DE as the SE bulb has the cover around the lighting element..... this has been a question that has bothered me for a while..... There are excellent reefs that have been kept using both styles of MH lighting so what other than personal preference makes one better....

The arc of the DE is said to be far more powerful than a SE however the difference may not be just the bulbs and is more likely the difference in ballasts. Another reason for a PAR meter.

The bulbs do not make that much of a difference, its the ballasts. DE bulbs will only run correctly on HQI or electronic ballasts. I would say if you use an HQI ballast and fire a SE bulb you would have just as much light as a DE bulb.
Also how a bulb performs is dependent on ballasts, some bulbs have more par on probe ballasts, some on pulse, some on hqi, etc.

The reflector makes a big difference too...I know that has nothing to do with the bulb but it will on its output.
