So in my tanks life so far I have come into a major pods boom both amphi and copepods, bristle worms and all those other little critters, even a couple micro stars and at least 2 asterinas.
I had my diatom outbreak and my GHA followed by some cyano. I can deal. Its all about patience right?
Well I also came on some bad things. Like I had a red foot snail. Easy cure by the sun in a bag (i didnt want to he was pretty) But cant have a carnivourous snail. (everything says it will eat anything)
I have a small aptasia problem. Isnt that a pain lol. But I am working on that.
But I found me a true beast tonight. A couple of them actually. I am finding some of those brown flatworms I have in my 2g are somehow in my 29. They dont bother my corals or CUC in the pico but I dont want them in my 29g.
The true beast though is a hideous creation. You can find these evil critters amongst your home or outside. They scare so many people on dry land they have an entire phobia named after them. (im not scared of them but dont like them) But the point is I have SEA SPIDERS!!!
They arent big yet. But there are several. I syphoned out the ones I could but I cant get them all. I would get a picture but they are so tiny you wouldnt see them. But picture this.
About the size of a pencil eraser. The body is about the size of a pencil lead. 8 Legs, when bothered they curl up in a ball just like any normal spider would.
What can I do to get rid of these guys? Its physically impossible to just syphon them all out. Would FWE get rid of these guys? A Wrasse maybe?
HELP!!!!!!

Well I am going to find out somehow to remove them. I would hate to have to tear the tank down over some pesky spiders.
I think they came in on that coral skeleton from berts live rock bin... Thats where I found them at first and never seen them before.
Ive got micro stars and baby brittle stars and these dont look like them.
When I got them out with the turkey baster they faught for a while then got smart and curled up in a ball and started sinking to the bottom.
Im not finding much info for how to get rid of them. But the ones in the south seas down super deep get up to 6 foot... Thats a huge spider lol... Sea spiders are actually a form of crustacean and not really a spider at all but they resemble them really well and are more of a pest than true spiders.
Keeping my hands out of the tank for awhile lol.

If I found one of those big ones in my tank I would drain it and throw it in the front yard

Im doing some research. Sea spiders are spiderlike crustaceans of the arthropod species. They are considered pycnogonids.
They are not poisonous and if bitten (rarely heard of) just watch for infections and allergic reactions. The majority live off of zoas. But some live off of aptasia and hydroids. Which I have a couple aptasia and lots of hydroid jellyfish. No corals other than the porcillpora which is not getting donated to P66 now due to this.
They cannot survive without their food source. Some people say they are evil some say you are lucky if you get them. They are actually not related to true spiders. They just massively resemble them... And the research continues...

Omg!! I am terrified of spiders. Shannon better hope that I don't see any in our tank cause it would have to come down.

from what i understand they are kinda like mandarins, berghia nudis and other like creatures in that they have a specialized diet and will starve out after that is gone. I have no zoas. But i do have aptasia (2) and hundreds of hydroid jellyfish. That is another item of choice i am finding. so i am not sure these will harm any coral... Not that I am in any rush to test that theory. Just observe and research.

I should be able to run up to the shop after work this friday. I will bring one up with me in a jar or something so you can see these little critters.
I have had 1 in an isolated jar for a few days now. no flow no aeration no food no anything. just glass water and spider... Hes still alive and active. Its amazing how long these things can go without anything.
Theres only about a half cup of water in the jar.
