Cool... could be diatoms, cyano, or even dinoflagellates.. Do you have anything sandsifting?

Lots of things... sandsifting star.. nassarius snails.. goby.. blennys.. etc... Depends on the type of algae.. will need a pic to fully tell before I make a suggestion.

You have excess nutrients in your system. You will need to limit them by using good water, a quality skimmer and not overfeeding. Even by doing this, it may take some time to get it straightened out. A good sand sifting crew will also help.

Both live and flake will cause the same problems. If the food is not being eaten within five minutes of feeding them you are giving too much.

Do you know your what your nitrates are and phosphates? If you have any phosphate you have too much if you have above five to ten nitrate your high also.

Did you use tap water to set up your tank? Also it is not uncommon to go through a cyano bloom during the first year after the tank is set up. Cyano is actually a bacteria, not an algae and it mostly uses nitrate to grow. I would say your nitrates have at one time been rather high and the cyano is consuming them. It will probably go away as long as you do not overfeed, have good circulation, a good skimmer, and a decent cleanup crew. Starting a fuge will also help lower nitrates and po4.
Also make sure to do your water changes...

yes i still use tap water is that bad? Yes, everytime you add tap you are adding a lot of nutrients to your tank. I suggest using RO DI water or at least distilled water.

You can buy it at grocery stores by the gallon or get it from some LFS. In the long run you will probably need to buy a water filtering system to save money.
Make sure if you buy it at a grocery store it has not been remineralized.

RO/DI is a great thing to have. You can buy it by the gallon at Jomars for 1$ per g which is not a bad price but in the end buying water is more than buying the unit.
I currently buy water from the shop for my 2g but when I cant I buy a gallon of distilled from Krogers.
I will be getting a unit myself before long. I understand your situation money is tight. But make sure you squeeze a unit in to your system (doubles as great drinking water)

you may try running some cheato too. I believe it will take in some phosphates. Also some food just doesn't get eaten, it drifts behind rocks and crevices so check your clean up crew with the packages the frag guys have posted. I need to add a few more myself.
